Senior Theatre Journalist | Content Lead
West End | London
Hybrid (typically 2 to 3 days per week in the office)
£50-60k plus competitive bonus
The Opportunity
We’re working with a market-leading live entertainment group, recently expanded through the acquisition of a prominent West End–focused digital platform. This role sits at the intersection of theatre, culture, and editorial leadership, offering rare access and real influence within the industry.
Our client is seeking a senior-level theatre journalist to own and elevate the editorial voice of a flagship West End brand. This is not a generalist content role. Deep, credible experience in theatre journalism is strongly preferred and will be a defining factor in the hiring decision.
Music journalism experience will be considered only where it demonstrates a similarly rigorous editorial background and a clear, existing connection to live performance and cultural coverage.
The Role
As Senior Theatre Journalist / Content Lead, you will be responsible for setting the editorial vision for a leading West End platform, while remaining actively involved in writing and reporting.
You will:
- Develop and own the long-term content and editorial strategy for a major West End theatre destination
- Write, edit, and commission authoritative theatre journalism, including reviews, interviews, features, and cultural analysis
- Attend West End productions as a core part of the role, including press nights, openings, festivals, and industry showcases
- Be present at every major cultural moment of significance, from new productions to awards seasons such as the Olivier Awards
- Act as the editorial lead and subject-matter authority for theatre coverage
- Line-manage, mentor, and develop two junior journalists/content creators
- Collaborate closely with marketing, digital, and commercial teams to align editorial output with wider brand and audience goals
- Ensure all content reflects a deep understanding of theatre, its audiences, and its cultural impact
Essential Experience
This role requires proven editorial experience in theatre or music journalism, with a strong preference for theatre journalism.
Candidates must demonstrate:
- A background in theatre journalism (reviews, features, interviews, criticism, or cultural reporting), ideally within a recognised publication or platform
- or
- Significant experience in music journalism with a clear focus on live performance, culture, and editorial credibility
- A portfolio of published work that shows authority, voice, and critical understanding of the arts
- Experience shaping editorial direction, not just producing content
- Previous responsibility for mentoring or managing junior writers or editors
Candidates without relevant arts journalism experience will not be considered.
